Viral hepatitis is a major public health problem, occurring
endemically in all parts of the world. Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) has
been identified as a 42 nm particle (known as the Dane particle),
containing double-stranded DNA.
The protein coat is known as Hepatitis B Surface antigen (HBsAg) and
is produced in excess during viral replication. HBsAg is most often
present in serum as 20-22 nm spherical particles and as tubular forms.
The surface antigen possesses common determinant a and mutually
exclusive sub-determinants 'D' or 'Y'. |
